Anisotropic scaling in depinning of a flux line.
We study the depinning of a flux line by analytical and numerical methods applied to a phenomenological equation of motion. Transverse fluctuations do not influence the critical behavior of the longitudinal component, justifying “planar approximations”. In an isotropic medium, longitudinal fluctuations have a roughness exponent ζ‖ = 1, and relax with a dynamic exponent z‖ ≈ 4/3; transverse fluc...
متن کاملRandomized polynuclear growth with a columnar defect
We study a variant of poly-nuclear growth where the level boundaries perform continuous-time, discrete-space random walks, and study how its asymptotic behavior is affected by the presence of a columnar defect on the line. We prove that there is a non-trivial phase transition in the strength of the perturbation, above which the law of large numbers for the height function is modified.
متن کاملPhase Transitions of the Flux Line Lattice in High-Temperature Superconductors with Weak Columnar and Point Disorder
We study the effects of weak point and columnar disorder on the vortexlattice phase transitions in high temperature superconductors. The combined effect of thermal fluctuations and of quenched disorder is investigated using a simplified cage model. For point disorder we use the mapping to a directed polymer in a disordered medium in 2+1 dimensions. For columnar disorder the problem is mapped in...
متن کاملSelf-similarity of contact line depinning from textured surfaces
The mobility of drops on surfaces is important in many biological and industrial processes, but the phenomena governing their adhesion, which is dictated by the morphology of the three-phase contact line, remain unclear. Here we describe a technique for measuring the dynamic behaviour of the three-phase contact line at micron length scales using environmental scanning electron microscopy. We ex...
متن کاملDepinning of a superfluid vortex line by Kelvin waves
We measure the interaction of a single superfluid vortex with surface irregularities. While vortex pinning in superconductors usually becomes weaker at higher temperatures, we find the opposite behavior. The pinning steadily increases throughout our measurement range, from 0.15Tc to over 0.5Tc. We also find that moving the other end of the vortex decreases the pinning, so we propose Kelvin wave...
